Total Knee replacement is a surgical procedure performed to relieve the pain and disability caused due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. In a Total Knee replacement procedure, also referred to as ‘knee arthroplasty’, damaged surfaces of a knee joint are removed and replaced with artificial implants called prosthesis. Such a surgery can be performed depending on whether the knee joint needs to be totally replaced or only the most damaged areas need replacement. A total knee replacement surgery is often performed in a minimally invasive procedure.
In recent years, ‘Bloodless Surgery’, a procedure different from the minimally invasive procedure has evolved, where blood transfusion or use of blood products is totally eliminated. Though a bloodless surgery needs more preparation time than a typical surgery, it offers more advantages. Absence of blood transfusion reduces the risks of contracting infections or diseases. A bloodless surgery also reduces recovery time and hospital costs.
