You might find it cozy but there are some side-effects of sleeping with your socks on.
Think sleeping with your socks on will keep you comfortable during the night? Well, you will need to cut this habit out of your life. You might wonder why we’re asking you to give up on the blissful coziness of wearing socks to bed.
Well, we talked to Dr Pritam Moon, consultant physician at Wockhardt hospital, Mumbai, to give you a clear picture. You see, wearing your socks overnight can actually interfere with your sleeping pattern as well as affect your heart rate. What’s more, many people also end up wearing tight socks which leads to rashes and infection. But, that’s not all!
1. High blood pressure
Wearing socks while sleeping is known to increase blood circulation but it can go another way too! Turns out, blood flow decreases if you keep your socks on for a very prolonged period of time.
2. Your feet hygiene can get compromised
Sleeping with your socks on can lead to poor hygiene. You see, if your socks are too tight or are not cleaned regularly, it will be impossible for your feet to breathe properly.
3. Increased risk of skin infection
Wearing socks made out of nylon or other material that doesn’t suit the skin can increase the risk of infection if worn for a very long time. Hence, you will have to choose socks which are skin-friendly. For example, try to pick out socks made out of cotton. In addition, change your socks regularly.
4. Your body temperature can shoot up
Wearing the right socks is essential as not doing so can cause overheating. If you wear socks that aren’t breathable, your body temperature might rise.
5. You won’t be able to sleep peacefully
Wearing tight socks can be uncomfortable and you won’t be able to get a good night’s sleep.
“If your skin is sensitive, ask your doctor whether you should wear socks to bed or not. Doing so might cause skin irritation if you wear the wrong kind of socks,” concluded Dr Moon.
There are other ways that you can use to keep your feet warm:
- You can massage your feet using hot oil.
- You can wash your feet with warm water and slip into your blanket.
- You can use a hot water bottle and once your feet are warm enough you can remove it.
- You can wear a really warm pair of socks at least an hour before you sleep and take them off before going to bed.
So, keep these tricks handy and stay warm.
