Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopment disorder that affects children. Even adults also suffer from this condition if the symptoms begin from childhood. This is a condition that can affect the overall performance of the child in school and it can cause difficulty in concentrating as well.
ADHD can be a result of the hyperactive behavior in children. To have effective control over the symptoms of ADHD early diagnosis is needed. Therefore, it can help a child lead a normal life.
Some children may show symptoms during the early years of life while others may show symptoms until they reach the teenage stage.
According to Dr. Sonal Anand who is a Psychiatrist in Wockhardt Hospital at Mira Road, Mumbai, Kids normally have hyperactive energy in them and that’s the reason they keep moving here and there, but in some cases, the mother might notice some activities that are much more than a normal kid.
It can be seen at an early age as well, like when they start walking they walk so much and don’t even get tired. It is a sign you must not ignore. ADHD kids don’t have an attention span; they are restless and have a lack of focus.
“The cause of ADHD is exactly not known to us till now, though genetics plays a role and it is a biological thing. It happens at the molecular level in the brain,” she said.
“We have medicines for ADHD, but if the child is very young, we do not advocate medicines for such children. Meanwhile, home preventions are very important if you know that your kid is hyperactive so try to keep the child in your range, or keep them confined in a particular area and make sure the child is in a safe environment,” she added.
ADHD: Signs And Symptoms In Kids
The early symptom of ADHD can be seen in children when the child becomes impatient too quickly. A child with ADHD finds it difficult to play quietly. They may also become impatient while waiting for their turn. This can sometimes make them hard to play with other kids.
Someone who is suffering from ADHD finds it very hard to stay in one particular place. Kids with ADHD are constantly in motion and may talk excessively than normal. They are too restless.
Inability to focus
The symptom of ADHD affects the day to day activities of the child and also affects their performance in school as well. A child with ADHD may find it hard to pay attention to what someone is saying and gets distracted easily.
Forgetfulness is one of the common symptoms among children with ADHD. ADHD makes the child forget things more often. The child may forget to complete the day to day activities and often lose their belongings on a frequent basis.
Emotional turmoil can be caused due to ADHD which can lead to anger outbursts at inappropriate times. While these symptoms may change with time as the child grows older, but some of the signs and symptoms can be noticed in adults too. This happens due to poor planning, mismanagement, restlessness, low tolerance level, stressed too often, impulsiveness, the problem at work, or forgetfulness.
What Can We Do About ADHD In Kids?
Dr. Anand said, “Home prevention is very important if you know that your kid is hyperactive. Try to keep the child in your range or keep them confined in a particular area, and make sure the child is in a safe environment. Or, try to keep the child engaged in something or try to know find out he likes the most.”
Moreover, there is a Behavior therapy which is given to children with ADHD. It is an effective treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that can improve a child’s behavior, self-control, and self-esteem. It is most effective in young children when it is delivered by parents.
