Vitamin B12 Deficiency Can Be a Risk Factor For Coronary Artery Disease

“The incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) is increasing at an alarming rate, especially in developing countries, such as India. It is often advocated that a vegetarian lifestyle could reduce the burden of CAD. However, in spite of a majority of Indians being vegetarians, the incidence of CAD is highest in this population.” A 32 year was admitted to Wockhardt Hospitals, North Mumbai emergency department. The patient was brought in a gasping state and had a sudden onset of crushing chest pain. Prior to getting admitted to the hospital, he underwent an ECG at a private nursing. His ECG showed that he had undergone a massive heart attack. Whilst getting transferred to the hospital lost his consciousness and was unresponsiveness on few occasions. Urgent PAMI (Primary Angioplasty Myocardial Infarction) was carried out by Dr. Anup Taksande Consultant- Cardiology salvaged this patient with complete neurological recovery. The emergency medical services at the hospital immediately carried out cardiac emergency procedures to revive the patient. The patient was rushed for a Coronary angiography and stenting. He was discharged on day 4 in a stable condition and was asked to follow life style modifications along with medications. Coronary artery disease develops when the major blood vessels that supply your heart with blood, oxygen and nutrients (coronary arteries) become damaged or diseased. Cholesterol-containing deposits (plaque) in your arteries and inflammation are usually to blame for coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is thought to begin with damage or injury to the inner layer of a coronary artery, sometimes as early as childhood. The damage may be caused by various factors, including: However in this case, none of the above factors were responsible for the heart condition. In fact the patient did not have any underlying heart condition or even family history of the same. What was identified was that he was a pure vegetarian. Pure vegetarians with Vitamin B12 deficiency are at equal/high risk for premature Acute Coronary deficiency of Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency in turns causes hyperhomocysteinemia. Elevated levels of serum homocysteine are associated with a 20% increased risk of circulatory health problem and heart conditions. High homocysteine levels in the blood can damage the lining of the arteries and can cause blood clots more easily than it should. This can increase the risk of blood vessel blockages and can be factor for heart attacks. Some Preventive Measures to reduce serum homocysteine would be eating more fruits and vegetables can help lower your homocysteine level. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach are good sources of folate. Increase the amount of vitamin B-6 in and increase the amount of vitamin B12 in your diet. Patient Lucy Testimonial – Herniated Disc

Case : Herniated Disc : “Dr Mazda has not only restored my mobility but has also made it possible to gain my livelihood back by returning to work. A heartfelt and big thank you to Wockhardt Hospital “ My name is Lucy Mhlanga, a 57 year old female from Zimbabwe Bulawayo. I was diagnosed with herniated disc in March of 2017 and my condition progressively grew worse to the extent that I was bed ridden and could hardly sit or walk even with the use of a walker. I was considering retiring on medical grounds as I was constantly on sick leave due to my condition. I was then put in touch with Dr Mazda Turel a neurosurgeon in Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central in India in August of 2018. Dr Turel after reviewing my case performed a decompression operation using a minimally invasive method for Herniated Disc. My relief from leg and back pain after the op was almost immediate and I could walk and sit once more. Within a week after the op I am back to my normal activities. Surprising thing is there is no pain at all at the point of incision where the op was carried out. Dr Mazda Turel assisted not only in performing the op but also with the recovery process as well due to the confidence he exuded and encouragement that he gave me. He was especially caring and visited daily post op to assess my condition. Not only Dr Mazda was caring but the entire medical team as well. From the operating theatre to the ward care, they made me feel that I was in safe hands, making the hospital stay less apprehensive and extremely pleasant. After the surgery I returned once more to my teaching job that I dearly love pain free and feel like a whole new person thanks to the team at Wockhardt Hospital . Patient Lucy Family member testimonial: A family member shares a heartwarming account of their experience at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central. “No words can ever communicate our gratitude to Dr. Mazda and the entire Wockhardt staff, the nurses, from the housekeeping, kitchen staff, the nurses, Dr. Mazda and his team, we say thank you, thank you very much. “ “My sister Lucy was admitted at Wockhardt hospital, Mumbai Central for a laminectomy procedure (Herniated Disc). I had accompanied her and right from the outset I was thoroughly impressed at the efficiency and dedication of the staff at the hospital. On arrival at the hospital her pre-operative tests were swiftly done and by evening she was pronounced fit for surgery the next morning. Dr. Mazda Turel, a neurosurgeon at the hospital, explained the procedure in detail and easily understandable language. Possible complications were also explained before and we were asked to sign the consent. The hospital also provided us with procedural details, including estimated time before going into the OR, approximate length of surgery, and estimated length of time before coming to the ward. I was anxious waiting for her outside the Operation OR but I was reassured and supported by the nursed and staff members. We were made to feel special and were looked after very well. The hospital was very generous with their meals. I was also given a complimentary health assessment. I did not line up for long and was fast tracked through all processes. My results were out by the end of the day and I was seen the next day. Waiting for your relative at the hospital can be very stressful, so I was pleased that I could complete by work whilst waiting due to the fast internet services at the hospital. Dr. Mazda Turel is a renowned neurosurgeon at Wockhardt Hospital .He is a very experienced doctor and after meeting him I had full faith and confidence in her surgery. Dr. Mazda had given her the best birthday gift ever after her operation, that she could move her foot. Dr. Mazda was very encouraging and reassuring at all times during his visits. Lucy had many anxieties about her recovery, even if she did not verbalize them and he gave her the confidence that she was doing well. Post operatively the nurses looked after Lucy very well. When Lucy woke up in The ICU and triggered a terrifying asthmatic attack she could not communicate that she could not breathe. The nursing staff held her hand and did not let go till she was comfortable. All the nursing staff was supportive but I would specially like to mention and thank Sister Joseph .She was pleasant and when Lucy could not breathe, she just smiled and kept reassuring her that she would feel better soon. The compassion and support motivated Lucy to get better. After her surgery the pain subsided and as soon as she started walking, her foot which was numb began to have some sensation and it was exciting to watch her walk after being bed ridden for almost four months. Lucy can now take a shower easily and stand on her left foot. It’s been an awesome experience to watch and be part of this healing. I am grateful to Wockhardt Hospital for transforming Lucy’s life and restoring her livelihood.

Knee Replacement: Golden Solution for Metal Implant Allergies

Metal allergies today, can become a hindrance to cure a chronic inflammatory condition like arthritis in the knee joint. The implants used generally in knee replacement, generally entail placing an implant made of cobalt and chromium. Patients who have been diagnosed with metal allergy cannot undergo the procedure. Dejected, patients feel that a door closes, of ever getting cured of pain throughout their life. Thanks to medical science today, a novel surgical modality called Golden Knee Replacement surgery can be the best alternative to this dilemma for patients and orthopaedic surgeons. Sterling Wockhardt hospital, at Vashi decided to take this initiative for a patient finally giving her a chance to probably have better quality of life and walk pain free. Shalini Sawant, a 55 year who was suffering from excruciating knee pain over some years wanted to find a solution. Knowing that she could not have the regular implants as a treatment option being diagnosed with metal allergy, she was in a constant anxiety seeking out options. A patient is generally diagnosed with metal allergy especially to nickel extracts. Nickle is used mainly in jewellery and is also a constituent in metal implants in knee replacement surgeries. Generally, in patients with metal allergy a skin rash appears where the metal comes in contact and this can lead to further complications like severe pain with inflammation and infections. Having a metal implant made of chromium or cobalt tend to release metal ions in the body and can become an unfortunate disaster for such patients, worsening their condition with complications like infection, pus formation and severe knee pain. The pathophysiology connected to metal allergy, is due to the release of metal ions which leads to oxidation in the human tissue causing this reaction. Under the guidance of Dr. Shailendra Patil an orthopaedic consultant at Sterling Hospital Wockhardt, Vashi having tremendous expertise in total knee replacement surgery, advised Ms Sawant to go in for this revolutionary procedure “Golden Knee Replacement Surgery”. Dr Patil completely understood the patient’s plight and wanted to bring about a solution. In this surgery a special knee implant which is coated with titanium nitride is used in the knee implants. These implants have a gold appearance and thus the implied procedural name. The surgery assures that patients will not experience allergic reactions and patient can have a second chance to walk again without the nagging pain and discomfort. Orthopaedic surgeons’ further advocate that Golden knee replacement surgery, make the implant more durable enhancing the longevity and performance in totality. Golden knee replacement technology is truly a boon for those with metal allergy conditions. Benefits of Golden Knee Replacement: Ms Sawant after undergoing the procedure successfully, is now set to lead better quality life and has found new hope. She is grateful to Dr Patil who ensured that life always wins, at Wockhardt Hospital. Dr. Shailendra Patil – MBBS, D.Ortho, D.N.B. Orthopaedic Joint Replacement & Arthroscopic Surgeon.
